The Isle of Man is situated in the Irish Sea, midway between England, Scotland and Ireland and is an internally self governing dependent territory of the British Crown, but is not part of the United Kingdom. The principal town and Capital of Douglas is where the Island's Parliament, Tynwald sits. This Assembly dates back to Viking origins over 1000 years ago, and is the oldest democratic legislature in the world in continuous existence. The Island is not part of the European Union however it does have a special relationship with the European Union by virtue of Protocol 3 of the Act of Accession of the United Kingdom. This extends the EU legal regime to the Island for limited purposes - principally customs (including VAT) and the free movement of goods. For more information on the Isle of Man see the official Isle of Man Government website at www.gov.im. For current taxes levied and rates see www.gov.im/treasury/incometax.
